Production Diary - Week 17

This week we have completed the final draft of our digipak! We have also created a tour poster and merchandise as add ons to create a deeper image of our artist. We have created a variety of drafts for our advert and are planning to get audience feedback to help us choose one to develop further into our final product. We are near completing all of our final products and I feel as though I have really progressed throughout the course of this work and I am pleased with the outcomes of our products so far.

Production Diary - Week 16

This week we have completed the final draft of our music video! We then carried out a final focus group to ensure that what we considered a final product would appeal to our audience and carry out it's desired effect. the audience really enjoyed the video although there are some minor improvements that we will need to make. We have also completed the second draft of our digipak which is close to now becoming a finished product and will also only need small changes, after showing it to some audience members they liked it but said that they weren't too keen on some of the fonts used so we will need to improve this in the future. We are hoping to have our digipak completed in the next week or 2 and to have improved our adverts further.

Production Diary - Week 15

We have mainly been focusing on starting the production of our digipak and advert this week and have created multiple first drafts for our advert and an intial draft for our digipak. These will still need redrafting before being a finished product but I think that as a start they work quite well. Before actually editing these together we had to think of song names, album names and create logos to use which were appropriate for our artist. I originally wanted to name the album 'Pillow Talk' however I think that the title 'Beyond Colour' is much more effective in presenting our genre and relates directly to our music video and our artist so I am happy with the name that we chose. Despite our main focus being on these two products we have not neglected our music video and have been improving it by adding the shots of the pillow fights and playing around with different transitions and colour effects to see which ones are most effective. It is close to christmas and so we will continue to edit these products when we get back in January as we do not have the facilities to do so at home.

Production Diary - Week 14

This week we have completed our first draft, as a whole I am happy with the outcome although there are improvements that we have established such as making the shots quicker to add a faster pace and more fun and lively feeling. We also carried out a photoshoot for our digipak and advert, we chose the theme of a pillow fight which was really effective to portray our genre and the fun image we want to create for our artist. Within the next week we are going to edit these pictures into creating a draft for our digipak and advert and we would also like to incorporate any shots of this into our music video to create a resemblance between the different products.

Production Diary - Photoshoot

We have carried out a photoshoot of our artist having a pillow fight to use for our digipak and our advert. We also decided to film some shots to put into our music video to obtain an intertextuality between the two. It was really fun to film here and we think that these will be really effective to show the fun side of our artist. Although the feathers were effective they were very difficult to clear up and managed to stick to everything which became a problem for the clear up.

Production Diary - Week 13

This week we have begun to edit our music video. We are trying to follow the storyboard as close as possible as an initial draft, so far this is going really well and I am happy with how the video is coming along. We are adding extra effects occasionally but are mainly sticking to how it was originally planned. We are hoping to have our first draft completed within the next week so we can then begin to focus on the creation of our advert and digipak.

Production Diary - Week 12

This week I have tried to focus on ideas for our digipak and advert. We each analysed at least one digipak and advert each to ensure that we were all familiar with them and knew the typical conventions. We then discussed some basic ideas which I have presented on my blog using kizoa. I am now planning to get feedback on these ideas so that we can decide which would best target our audience and we can begin to plan and construct our final digipak and advert.

Production Diary - Week 11

This week we have completed our second day of filming. It was a very successful day of shooting, we spent the day in Camden Town and Regent's Park. We ensured that all planned shots were filmed as well as a few spontaneous including one of our artist feeding a squirrel that we encountered in the park which we would like to include because we think it is quite effective. The weather started off quite well however it did begin to rain as we moved into Regent's Park, we found ways to use this to our advantage and managed to film a shot of our artist in front of a rainbow which we would definitely like to include in our video. We are hoping to begin editing next week as well as beginning to look into adverts and digipaks and hope to have the first draft of our music video completed in the next 2 weeks.

Production Diary - Week 10

We have began filming this week. We spent yesterday filming at the beach after spending the week planning what shots we needed to have done and the mise-en-scene so that we were prepared. I think that the day went really well, we got all of the shots that we wanted to as well as many extras because it will be difficult for us to go back and refilm or film new shots in the future due to the weather. I think that these shots will be very effective in our video because they are very representative of the genre and bring a positive vibe to the video. We are planning to film in London next week so we will spend the next week ensuring that everything is planned for and organised. Below is a video of us on location at Walton Pier, overall it was a very successful shoot and I look forward to future filming and post production.

Production Diary - Week 9

This week we have focused on creating the star image of our artist including her name as well as planning our storyboard for our video. We have chosen the name Sasha which I think is really representative of our artist and works well for our audience. We have progressed in the storyboard and have put it in time with our song so that we can follow it more closely. Throughout the next week we are going to be planning to film at the beach to ensure that we are fully prepared.

Production Diary - Week 8

This week we have began more structured planning into our music video and will continue to do so over the next few weeks before we film. We have decided upon 2 base locations where we will begin our filming and have set days in which we will be able to film there, we have looked into other locations but have decided that 2 locations should be enough as we don't want to overwhelm the audience. After our first draft is completed we will reassess this decision to see if our audience feel more locations are needed. This week we have also carried out a lip sync rehearsal to ensure that our lip syncing is on time when shooting so that we will have enough footage and won't have to refilm. I feel much more organised and am excited to begin the production of our final video.

Production Diary - Week 6

As planned I have analysed 3 music videos this week, including Nina Nesbitt - Way in the World which I found particularly helpful because it has some similarities to the video that we are hoping to create. I also analysed Sigala - Easy Love which is the same genre as our video and uses editing and effects well to represent the genre and themes throughout. I also analysed Beyonce's 7/11 because when I carried out audience research Beyonce was the most popular artist. Other members of my group have also analysed music videos so collectively we have strong ideas of how a music video is supposed to look which has helped us to revise our ideas. We also created a letter to the copyright holder to send to our artist, this will ensure that we wouldn't encounter any copyright issues when creating our video.

Production Diary - Week 3

We have begun to look into our target audience. As a group we decided upon the age range and gender of our audience and what kind of people that they would be. We then created a questionnaire targeting our audience to find out what they would quite like to see in our video and if there is anything they think could improve our ideas. We will take their opinions highly into account because they will be the ones who watch the video and make it successful. We finally conducted a focus group where we focused completely on the opinions of 6 members of our target audience, we chose to also include the opinions of boys in our age range although our audience will be mainly female because we think that it is important to reach a wide audience.

Production Diary - Week 2

This week we have created a reconstruction of Britney Spears’ ‘Baby One More Time’ video. This has been really fun to recreate and has taught me a lot about how to plan, produce and edit our music video. The main areas which I would like to implement from this into our video is using multiple cameras and planning in detail. I also edited the whole video and so have gained much more editing experience which will be helpful for our video. After completing this I am much more excited for our final product and feel as though I have developed more skills to create our final piece. I have evaluated our music video which has helped me to highlight the areas that I should use in our final product as well as what we should work on. For example, if we decide to use dancers we should ensure they all know the choreography and are confident to dance on camera.

Our substitution as we could not do the dance routine
The use of 2 cameras
In the image below I have outlined some areas in the production that I found useful when editing. The razor tool was very helpful to split clips so that I could choose specific parts of a shot. I decided to layer the real product over our shots when editing so that I could compare them and ensure timing was good. When adding a shot I would insert one clip and split that into the parts I wanted then delete the rest before moving onto another clip, this was very helpful in minimising the time I spent editing and is something I will consider doing in the post production of our final product.

Production Diary - Summer Work

Over the summer I have completed various pieces of work looking into the music industry. Firstly I looked at the history of music, I found this really interesting and think that this will help me to develop a further understanding of the industry and the production of music videos before making my own. I also looked at the definition of being a star to help me when creating the image of my artist. I chose to look at Beyonce because she is one of the biggest stars around, often being referred to as 'Queen B', so I thought that looking at her own image and history would be most useful to establish an artist who would have a wide fan base. I then briefly thought of some ideas for my own piece as something to build upon in the future. I then looked more personally into my own experiences with music and how my taste in music has grown throughout my life, this was interesting to consider how the music I listen to has altered and broadened and will help me to consider my target audience for my artist.
I think that carrying out this work is extremely useful as a start into the research of the music industry and has given me some inspiration into what I would like to do for my own video.
